Hobart’s Free E-Bike Library

Ever wondered if an e-bike could work for you? This library gives you the chance to borrow one for two weeks – for free!

The City of Hobart, with support from the Tasmanian Government, has set up this library to help locals experience the benefits of e-bikes before making the leap and buying one.

Whether you’re thinking about commuting, running errands, or just cruising around town – this is your chance to test one out.

How it works

  • Choose your e-bike: Click on the ‘Choose My Bike’ tab to see the different models available to borrow in the library.
  • Make your booking: Select your two-week borrowing period. Please note that pick-ups happen on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
  • Pick up your bike: When your timeslot comes around, collect the bike from Hobart Bike Hire (1B Brooke St, Hobart). You’ll need to complete some paperwork, pay a $500 refundable bond, and do a quick induction.
  • Enjoy the ride: Use the e-bike as much as you like across the two weeks to see if it’s right for you.
  • Return the bike: Bring the e-bike back to Hobart Bike Hire and help us improve the program with a quick survey.

To be eligible to make a booking, you must be 18 or older, live in Tasmania and have a safe, secure place to store the e-bike when not in use.

There are currently six e-bikes available in the library, so please be aware that you may have to wait a while for your preferred bike. We are working on sourcing additional e-bikes.

The Bicycle Network will provide participants with a complimentary three months of bike riding insurance, covering medical, income and third-party liability.
